Delhi Lakshmi Yojana: CM hands sanction letters to over 4,000 women

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta distributed sanction letters to 4,190 eligible women under the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana at an event in the Capital on Wednesday.

Beneficiaries will receive ₹2,500 per month through direct benefit transfer from September 1 under the scheme, a release from the Chief Minister’s Office stated, adding that letters have been issued following the prescribed eligibility and verification process.

‘Overwhelming response’

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Gupta said the overwhelming response to the scheme, with more than 9 lakh women registered so far, reflects the trust and confidence women have reposed in the initiative.

The event, held at Talkatora Stadium, was also attended by Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Harsh Malhotra, among others.

“The scheme is not limited to providing financial assistance. It is also meant to give women financial security, confidence and the ability to make their own decisions,” said the CM. The government will ensure that those eligible receive the benefits in a transparent and organised manner, she added.

Ms. Gupta said the scheme has been framed to take into account women’s present-day needs and future savings, which is why beneficiaries will get ₹1,000 in their digital wallets to meet current expenses and the remaining aid in their fixed or recurring deposit accounts.

Symbol of strength

Women are regarded as symbols of prosperity and strength in society as they not only manage their families but also strengthen society, she said.

Ms. Gupta opened registrations for the scheme for women aged 21-60 on August 1. Applicants need to obtain an endorsement letter from their MP or MLA.

On August 24, the Delhi High Court asked the government to file an affidavit within 10 days explaining why women seeking financial assistance under the initiative must obtain an endorsement from their MP or MLA.

Providing ₹2,500 in monthly financial aid to poor women was one of the BJP’s key promises in the run-up to the 2025 Assembly election.

The scheme, which was titled ‘Mahila Samriddhi Yojana’ in the party manifesto, was later renamed Delhi Lakshmi Yojana.
