Japan JR East launches same-day Shinkansen luggage delivery service

Travelers in Japan will soon be able to explore more freely before boarding the Shinkansen, thanks to a new same-day luggage delivery service from East Japan Railway (JR East).

Starting August 1, JR East is expanding its JRE Hands-Free Travel program by allowing passengers to drop off suitcases at designated smart lockers in Tokyo Station and Sendai Station for same-day delivery to participating hotels in the other city.

The new service uses JR East’s Multi-Ecube lockers together with its Hakobyun Quick logistics network, which transports luggage aboard Shinkansen trains rather than by truck. It marks the first time the company’s locker-based luggage service has offered same-day deliveries between different prefectures.

Passengers can reserve a locker online by 9:30 a.m. on the day of travel and must deposit their luggage by 10:30 a.m. Deliveries are made to hotels accepting the service later the same day.

Pricing starts at ¥3,500 (about US$24) for a small locker, ¥3,600 (about US$25) for a medium locker, and ¥3,700 (about US$25.50) for a large locker. Each locker accommodates one suitcase or bag.

Previously, travelers using JR East’s cross-city luggage forwarding service had to visit staffed station counters. The new self-service locker option is designed to reduce waiting times and make station transfers easier, particularly for international visitors carrying large suitcases.

The Tokyo-Sendai route is the first to offer the enhanced service, but JR East plans to expand it. Beginning this fall, travelers will also be able to leave luggage in Tokyo station lockers for same-day delivery to counters at Narita and Haneda airports.

The railway operator is also testing a fully automated airport-to-station system that would allow passengers to collect luggage from station lockers after arriving by air, eliminating the need for staffed counters.

The bullet train covers the roughly 350-kilometer journey between Tokyo and Sendai in about 90 minutes, enabling same-day delivery that would otherwise take much longer by truck.
