China Steel Rebar Futures Fall to CNY 3,060 Amid Property Crisis and Low Demand – News and Statistics

Steel rebar futures in China have settled near CNY 3,060 per tonne, retreating from a one-month high of CNY 3,130 recorded on July 16, according to Trading Economics. The decline is attributed to persistently low demand within the country.

The prolonged property crisis, driven by an oversupply of housing, has curbed investment in new construction. New home prices continued to contract in June, while construction starts by floor area dropped 23.4% year-on-year during the first half of the year. Construction accounts for roughly one-third of Chinese steel demand and represents the majority of rebar purchases.

Manufacturing growth has also remained subdued, as weak consumer demand combines with protectionist trade policies that limit foreign orders for goods producers. The softening momentum in auto production growth has further weighed on the sector. As a result, domestic steel output totaled 500 million tonnes in the first half of the year, approximately 3% below the level recorded in the same period of 2025.

Despite these headwinds, substantial infrastructure spending by Beijing—including investments in power plants, electrical grids, and electricity storage—has provided support for steel consumption.
