Indonesia wants to be the king of halal products in the world, Menag Soroti Literacy is still low

TANGERANG – The government targets Indonesia to rise in the halal industry. Not just a big market, but to become the number one halal product producer in the world.

The target was conveyed by the Minister of Religion when opening the Indonesia Halal Brands & Food or IHBF Expo 2026 at NICE PIK 2, Tangerang, Saturday, May 30, 2026.

“Our ambition as one of the largest Muslim countries in the world, we must become the highest producer of halal products in the world. Our sharia economy is now second in line, and God willing, we can become the top,” said the Minister of Religion.

The Minister of Religion said that Indonesia’s sharia economic position continues to improve. Indonesia is said to have jumped from fifth to second place globally. The capital is big: the number of Muslim population, a large market, and growing business actors.

However, the homework is also big. Menag highlighted the low level of Islamic economic literacy in the Indonesian community. He compared it with Malaysia, whose level of Islamic economic awareness is said to have reached 76 percent. Indonesia is only around 7 percent.

This figure is an alarm. The big market alone is not enough if the community does not understand the value, benefits, and power of the halal economy.

Through the IHBF Expo 2026, the government wants to increase public awareness to more than 50 percent. This exhibition is expected to not only be a showcase of products, but also an educational space, especially for the younger generation.

The Minister of Religion invites business actors to view the development of halal products as a serious effort to strengthen the economy of the people. He said that the development of the sharia economy and the halal lifestyle needs to go in two directions: to be more widely known and to understand its value.

According to the Minister of Religion, the guarantee of halal products in the future will be a public need. Halal products are considered to have the potential to be increasingly popular, both in Indonesia and in the world market.

IHBF Expo 2026 will take place on May 29-31, 2026. This event is held through cooperation between the Ministry of Religion, the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency or BPJPH, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry or Kadin, and DARE Indonesia.

The Minister of Religion also reminded business actors not to see this exhibition solely as an opportunity to pursue profit. This momentum needs to be used to introduce halal products more widely and build market confidence.

At the global level, the Minister of Religion said halal products are no longer synonymous with Muslim-majority countries. Halal food is now easier to find in countries such as Japan, South Korea, and a number of European countries. England is also said to show great interest in studying the halal product ecosystem.

This event was also attended by national entrepreneur Sandiaga Uno, Director of Halal Product Assurance of the Ministry of Religion M Fuad Nasar, Secretary of the Directorate General of Islamic Information Lubenah, and members of the Honorary Council of the Central IWAPI DPP Dewi Motik Pramono.
