Domestic steel mill output increased last week to a seven-week high, according to recently released American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) figures.

Raw steel production was estimated at 1,858,000 short tons (st) in the week ending July 25, up 28,000 st, or 1.5%, from the prior week (Figure 1). This is the highest weekly rate seen since early June and only 40,000 st below the six-year high of 1,898,000 st seen in May.

Output was 2.0% above the year-to-date (YTD) weekly average of 1,821,000 st, and 4.9% higher than the same week one year ago. YTD production now stands at 53,640,000 st, up 5.8% from the same period in 2025.

The mill capability utilization rate was 80.5% last week, up compared to both the previous week (79.3%) and one year prior (78.2%).

Raw production increased week over week (w/w) in three of the five AISI-defined regions:

  • Northeast – 132,000 st (up 8,000 st)
  • Great Lakes – 500,000 st (up 17,000 st)
  • Midwest – 317,000 st (down 7,000 st)
  • South – 848,000 st (up 19,000 st)
  • West – 61,000 st (down 9,000 st)

Editor’s note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends. The graphic included in this report shows unadjusted weekly data. The monthly AISI “AIS 7” report is available by subscription and provides a more detailed summary of domestic steel production.
