Malaysia foreign minister calls for review of UN refugee agency’s presence, state media reports

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 luglio (Reuters) – La Malesia dovrebbe riconsiderare la possibilità di consentire all’agenzia delle Nazioni Unite per i rifugiati di operare nel paese, a meno che questa non imponga controlli più rigorosi sul rilascio dei documenti di rifugiato, secondo quanto riportato martedì dai media statali citando le parole del ministro degli esteri.

Le dichiarazioni del ministro Mohamad Hasan sono giunte il giorno dopo che le autorità hanno fermato più di 100 richiedenti asilo rohingya che si erano radunati davanti alla sede dell’agenzia a Kuala Lumpur per chiedere assistenza dopo essere stati sfrattati dalle loro case nello Stato di Penang.    

Secondo l’agenzia di stampa statale Bernama, il ministro ha affermato che il governo, tramite il Ministero dell’Interno, sta attualmente lavorando per garantire che il processo di verifica dei rifugiati venga condotto congiuntamente dall’UNHCR e dalle autorità locali al momento del rilascio dei documenti.

«Vogliamo cooperazione e una selezione rigorosa. Se non vogliono collaborare, a mio avviso, è giunto il momento di riconsiderare la presenza dell’UNHCR nel paese, in modo da non continuare a sopportarne l’onere”, avrebbe dichiarato Mohamad.

L’ufficio dell’UNHCR stava attirando un numero crescente di rifugiati in Malesia, compresi i musulmani rohingya, ha affermato. 

L’ufficio dell’UNHCR a Kuala Lumpur non ha risposto immediatamente a una richiesta di commento sulle dichiarazioni del ministro.

L’agenzia aveva dichiarato martedì in un comunicato precedente che stava collaborando con le autorità per proteggere i Rohingya detenuti e verificare la loro documentazione.

«Questi sforzi hanno contribuito al loro trasferimento in alloggi alternativi, operazione attualmente in corso», ha affermato.

Tutti i Rohingya detenuti possiedono documenti validi rilasciati dall’UNHCR e saranno temporaneamente ospitati presso il quartier generale della polizia di Kuala Lumpur in attesa di ulteriori provvedimenti da parte dell’agenzia per i rifugiati, ha riferito martedì Bernama, citando un alto funzionario di polizia. 

La Malesia, a maggioranza musulmana, è stata a lungo considerata un rifugio sicuro per i Rohingya in fuga dalle persecuzioni in Birmania, paese a maggioranza buddista, ma negli ultimi mesi i discorsi d’odio e la disinformazione online hanno esposto il gruppo a maggiori vessazioni e controlli.

Sebbene la Malesia non sia firmataria della Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite sui rifugiati e consideri i richiedenti asilo come migranti illegali, secondo il sito web dell’agenzia, alla fine di febbraio nel paese erano registrati presso l’UNHCR circa 126.000 musulmani rohingya.
