“We assure our support for the Chelsea-AC Milan match. We will do whatever we can while taking all limitations into account,” he said.
The match between the European football clubs is expected to generate economic benefits through accommodation, transportation, ticket sales, taxes and other activities, Thohir said.
The event, organized by promoter Nine Sport Inc, will also promote Indonesia’s image among the global sports community.
Thohir praised private-sector support for bringing major international sporting events to Indonesia.
He said hosting the match supports his ministry’s efforts to develop the sports industry in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directives.
Sports development is being directed toward creating revenue opportunities for Indonesia, Thohir said.
“Don’t see sports as a burden. Many think sports are only about costs. In fact, sports have become a revenue center and an additional source of income,” he said.
Nine Sport Inc CEO Arif Putra Wicaksono said the company was proud to bring major European clubs to Indonesia again after more than a decade.
He said the match would help promote Indonesia because it will be broadcast in 70 countries.
“This is a rebranding moment for Indonesia after a long period without visits from European clubs,” Wicaksono said.
