TORQUAY residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals next month when the Victorian government’s annual Detox Your Home event returns to the Surf Coast.

The free event will be held at the Torquay Works Depot on Saturday 22 August from 9am to 1pm.

Residents can drop off a wide range of household chemicals, including cleaning products such as bleach, oven cleaner and hydrochloric acid, garden chemicals including fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides, as well as fuels, brake fluid, coolants and lubricants.

Paint, cosmetics and oils are no longer accepted, with paint now able to be taken to the Paintback facility at the Anglesea Transfer Station.

Surf Coast Shire councillor Joel Grist said the event provided an easy way for residents to dispose of hazardous household chemicals responsibly.

“Many of us have unwanted or expired chemicals tucked away in the shed, garage or under the sink,” he said.

“Detox Your Home makes it easy to get rid of these items safely, keeping them out of landfill and protecting our waterways and environment.”

Cr Grist said the Torquay event had collected more than 14.5 tonnes of hazardous household chemicals over the past five years.

“The Torquay event has collected more than 14.5 tonnes of hazardous household chemicals over the past five years, including 2,315kg at last year’s event alone.”

“This is always a popular event and it regularly books out, so get in early,” he said.

Bookings are essential, with the event open to household quantities only. Business waste will not be accepted.

Torquay Works Depot is at 130 Messmate Road.
