Malaysia’s digital infrastructure ambitions receive a boost as Digital Realty launches Cyberjaya expansionIn a significant move underscoring Malaysia’s emergence as a regional digital hub, Digital Realty has unveiled an ambitious expansion of its data centre operations in Cyberjaya. This development positions Malaysia at the forefront of Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing digital infrastructure landscape, catering to rising demand for AI, cloud, and data-intensive services across the region.Context: Southeast Asia’s escalating digital demandsThe exponential growth in artificial intelligence workloads, cloud computing, and digital transformation initiatives across Southeast Asia is driving demand for advanced data infrastructure. Malaysia, with its strategic location and supportive government policies, is rapidly becoming a preferred destination for global data centre players. As organisations across industries accelerate their transition to hybrid and AI-centric IT architectures, robust local infrastructure is seen as a critical enabler.Cyberjaya campus: A multi-facility approach to scale and connectivityDigital Realty’s expansion in Malaysia centres around a multi-site data centre campus in Cyberjaya, the country’s premier tech city. The plan involves three interconnected facilities designed to deliver a combined IT capacity of approximately 32 megawatts upon completion. These sites, linked by dedicated fibre, are expected to serve enterprises seeking low-latency connectivity for AI, cloud, and high-performance computing workloads. The first facility, branded KUL10, is already operational with 1.5MW of IT capacity and is set for an upgrade to align with Digital Realty’s global standards. By late 2027, its capacity is projected to nearly double, meeting the needs of a digitally ambitious market. KUL11, situated a short distance from KUL10, offers 15MW of capacity and is purpose-built for AI and advanced computing requirements. It incorporates advanced energy and water-efficient features to address sustainability goals—a growing priority among multinational clients. To further reinforce its presence, Digital Realty has secured an adjacent 1.6-acre parcel to develop a third facility, KUL12, targeting 14MW of capacity with a completion window set for mid-2028. This trio of data centres is designed to function as a unified digital platform, supported by more than 40 network service providers and a diverse set of cloud and connectivity partners.Integrating Malaysia into the global digital fabricThe Cyberjaya campus will be directly integrated into Digital Realty’s global PlatformDIGITAL network, which spans over 300 data centres in more than 30 countries. This integration enables Malaysian and regional enterprises to seamlessly deploy applications and manage data-intensive operations across borders, including key Asian hubs like Singapore and Jakarta.Serene Nah, Managing Director and Head of Asia Pacific at Digital Realty, highlighted Malaysia’s strategic value within the company’s regional portfolio. She noted that Malaysia’s role as an interconnection hub is becoming increasingly crucial as organisations seek scalable, interconnected infrastructure for distributed and latency-sensitive workloads. “The speed at which we have established a multi-site presence reflects strong customer demand and our long-term commitment to supporting Malaysia’s digital growth,” she said in comments reported by DataCenterNews Asia Pacific.Government and industry support for digital investmentMalaysia’s government has made digital infrastructure a national priority, linking it to broader ambitions of becoming a regional innovation and AI powerhouse. Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, described Digital Realty’s move as a critical milestone in strengthening the country’s position as a sovereign and sustainable digital infrastructure leader. He emphasised that investments in high-quality, globally connected data centres are essential for supporting innovation and attracting both domestic and foreign capital. The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has echoed these sentiments, with CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil stating that catalytic digital investments are vital for the nation’s aspirations to become an “AI Nation” by 2030. According to Fadzil, the country’s Malaysia Digital (MD) initiative aims to foster a digital ecosystem where businesses can innovate and scale, leveraging world-class infrastructure to participate more effectively in global value chains.Operational excellence and customer valueIndustry insiders point to the operational discipline and global expertise that Digital Realty brings to the Malaysian market. Billy Lee, whose team was instrumental in developing TelcoHub 1—a highly connected facility in the region—remarked that joining Digital Realty’s international platform offers immediate advantages. Customers now gain access to a broader interconnection ecosystem, enabling flexible expansion beyond Malaysia while maintaining local support and expertise.Implications for Malaysia’s digital and AI landscapeWith global players like Digital Realty reinforcing their commitment, Malaysia’s digital infrastructure sector is poised for accelerated growth. The integration of local facilities into a worldwide platform is expected to attract further investments, spur innovation, and enhance the country’s competitiveness as a digital economy leader.Analysts note that the alignment of private sector investment with public sector vision is key to ensuring Malaysia’s continued relevance in the regional and global digital economy. The focus on sustainability, interconnection, and scalable capacity reflects best practices from leading digital markets and positions Malaysia as a partner of choice for enterprises with global ambitions.Looking ahead: Malaysia’s role in the digital futureAs digital adoption intensifies and AI-driven applications proliferate, Malaysia’s infrastructure needs will only grow. Digital Realty’s Cyberjaya campus is set to play a pivotal role in this transformation, supporting not only domestic enterprises but also regional and international players seeking a resilient and interconnected base in Southeast Asia. With continued government backing and sustained investment from major industry players, Malaysia appears well on track to establish itself as a digital infrastructure powerhouse—fueling innovation, job creation, and economic growth across the region.
