The bodies of 34 Bangladeshi migrant workers have been brought back home from Kuwait, Malaysia and Libya.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, the bodies arrived in Dhaka today (18 April) on separate flights after being stranded abroad for an extended period due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Of the total, 30 bodies were flown in from Kuwait on flight KU-5283, two from Malaysia on flight BS-316, and another two from Libya on flight QR-640.

Officials said many of the bodies had been awaiting repatriation as flights were repeatedly disrupted amid the war situation in the region.

Upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the bodies were handed over to their families following completion of necessary formalities.

During the handover, the government’s Wage Earners’ Welfare Board provided Tk35,000 to each family to cover burial and related expenses. “Any additional financial benefits or insurance claims due to the deceased workers’ families will be processed promptly,” the release added.

Al Amin Nayan, an official of the BRAC Migration Programme stationed at the airport, said the repatriation was delayed due to flight cancellations linked to the regional conflict.

“Several flights from Kuwait were cancelled due to the war situation, and these bodies were supposed to arrive on those flights. As a result, there was a backlog,” he told The Business Standard, adding that a chartered flight was later arranged to bring them back.

Airport officials and representatives of the welfare board were present during the handover process.
