Japan: Yuto Nagatomo in tears after being called up for the 2026 World Cup

At 39, Yuto Nagatomo will compete in the fifth World Cup of his career after being named in Japan’s squad for the 2026 tournament. The former Inter Milan defender broke down in tears upon hearing the news, becoming the first Japanese player in history to take part in five editions of the tournament.

In a video released by the Japanese Football Association, Yuto Nagatomo appears visibly emotional as he discovers his name on the final Samurai Blue roster. His last appearance for the national team dated back to September 2025 against the United States, which had fueled speculation about his international future.

Moriyasu banks on experience

Head coach Hajime Moriyasu ultimately decided to rely on Nagatomo’s experience and leadership, despite having established players like Wataru Endo and Junya Ito in the squad.

A World Cup regular since 2010, Yuto Nagatomo played a key role in Japan’s historic qualification for the round of 16 in 2010, 2018, and 2022. Now at 39, he’s ready to embark on yet another adventure on football’s grandest stage.
