Singapore Wealth-Tech Firms Expand to Hong Kong: Chocolate Finance Launches with 3.8% Return – News and Statistics

Singapore-based wealth-tech firms are increasingly choosing Hong Kong as their first major overseas expansion market, attracted by the city’s large pool of idle savings, deep wealth base, and its role as a regional financial hub. The latest firm to enter this market is Chocolate Finance, which launched in Hong Kong last month with a product aimed at retail investors’ idle cash.

According to the source, Chocolate Finance offers an annualized return of 3.8 percent on the first HK$100,000 (approximately US$12,763), with no minimum balance requirement, no lock-up period, and daily interest accrual. CEO Tim Jones explained that the company selected Hong Kong as its first overseas market due to the substantial idle savings in the local banking system. He estimated that about HK$4 trillion sits in local bank accounts, comprising HK$1 trillion in current accounts and HK$3 trillion in savings deposits, which he noted averages roughly HK$500,000 per person doing nothing.

Jones also highlighted Hong Kong’s role as a wealth-management hub, making it a natural first step outside Singapore, where the firm built and tested its product. He additionally pointed to the city’s high adoption of digital financial services as supportive of a fully app-based model. The expansion path also reflects a practical constraint: Singapore’s domestic market is smaller, limiting how much platforms can scale at home, whereas Hong Kong offers a larger and more liquid pool of retail wealth without requiring a major shift in product design or regulatory approach.
