UK Financial Stocks to Watch as Higher Interest Rates Lift Banks and Insurers

Rising oil prices, sticky inflation and the prospect of further Bank of England rate hikes are putting the spotlight back on UK financial stocks. Higher rates can reshape funding costs, pressure borrowers and change what investors are willing to pay for banks and insurers, all at the same time. For retail investors, that mix can present both opportunity and risk. This article looks at how the latest macro headlines might affect large UK listed financial groups and sets out three stocks that appear positively exposed to the current interest rate story, helping you decide whether they deserve a place on your watchlist.

Close Brothers Group (LSE:CBG)

Overview: Close Brothers Group is a UK merchant bank that lends to small businesses and consumers, focusing on asset finance for SMEs, property development loans, used vehicle finance and insurance premium funding, alongside savings products.

Operations: Close Brothers Group generates around £302.9 million from Commercial banking, £201.8 million from Retail banking and £88 million from Property banking, with total reported group revenue of about £662.2 million almost entirely in the United Kingdom.

Market Cap: £628 million

Close Brothers Group stands out in the current interest rate story because it is a focused lender that typically benefits when UK rates stay elevated, as higher net interest margins support returns on its loan book. At the same time, the stock trades at a low P/B multiple and at a discount to some valuation estimates, reflecting concerns around credit quality, the FCA’s motor finance review and recent regulatory uncertainty. Management is reshaping the business around core lending, pursuing cost savings and technology improvements, while also refinancing debt and tidying up the capital structure. For investors, the key consideration is whether the combination of potential margin support from rates and ongoing restructuring is enough to offset the current risks.

Close Brothers Group’s low P/B and focused lending model hint at a story the market may be missing, and the 3 key rewards and 2 important warning signs could show why today’s caution might be masking one crucial turning point.

Metro Bank Holdings (LSE:MTRO)

Overview: Metro Bank Holdings is a UK retail and commercial bank that offers current and savings accounts, mortgages, business loans, credit cards and safe deposit boxes, combining high street branches with digital and mobile banking for individuals, businesses and private clients.

Operations: Metro Bank Holdings generates around £574 million of revenue from banking services, almost entirely in the United Kingdom.

Market Cap: £1.21b

Metro Bank Holdings is tightly linked to the Bank of England rate story because its UK focused lending and large pool of low cost deposits mean higher interest rates can directly support earnings, yet the stock also carries clear warning signs. Forecast earnings growth of around 31% a year and revenue growth of about 13% sit beside a relatively high P/E multiple, elevated bad loans at 5.1% and modest ROE of 3.5%, so expectations already price in a lot going right. For investors, the interest lies in whether Metro Bank’s branch led, relationship model, digital upgrades and higher yielding lending can justify those growth hopes while keeping credit risk and valuation in check as the rate cycle plays out.

Metro Bank’s growth story is accelerating, but the mix of a relatively high P/E, 5.1% bad loans and modest 3.5% ROE raises sharp questions only a full 2 key rewards and 2 important warning signs

Aviva (LSE:AV.)

Overview: Aviva is a large insurer and retirement provider that sells general insurance, life and health cover, pensions and savings products, and investment management services to individuals, businesses and institutions across the UK, Ireland, Canada and selected international markets.

Operations: Aviva generates most of its revenue from Insurance, Wealth & Retirement (£11.7b) and UK & Ireland General Insurance (£11.5b), with additional contributions from Canada General Insurance (£4.5b), Aviva Investors (£413m), International Investments (£107m) and Other Group Activities (£1.5b), partly offset by inter segment eliminations.

Market Cap: £20.7b

Aviva is attracting fresh attention because its core insurance and retirement businesses can benefit from higher interest rates through improved investment returns. At the same time, rising oil prices keep inflation and future Bank of England decisions in focus. Management has been actively reshaping the balance sheet with note redemptions and tender offers, which can simplify the capital structure. An ageing population and growing private pension demand support long term premium and fee income trends. However, tight profit margins, questions over dividend coverage and the execution risk of integrating recent acquisitions mean this is not a set and forget income stock. For investors, the real interest lies in how Aviva balances rate supported tailwinds against these pressures over the next few years.

Aviva’s rate sensitive insurance and retirement engine might be masking a bigger story around capital reshaping and income resilience. The 3 key rewards and 1 important major warning sign could reveal the real trade off investors are missing.
