Foundation stone laid for AWS data center development in Telangana, India

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has kicked off construction of its data center campus in Bharat Future City on the outskirts of Hyderabad, India.

Telangana’s Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy this week laid the foundation stone for AWS’ flagship data center in the region, kicking off the first phase of the project.

As reported by The Hindu, the first phase of development is expected to be completed within two years, while the remaining phases will be executed over the next ten years with a total investment of around Rs 60,000 crore ($6.23bn).

The project is set for 202 acres in Bharat Future City and 98 acres in Chandanvelly.

Details about the number of data center buildings and IT capacity expected at the site have not been provided.

“Amazon Web Services’ decision to significantly expand its data center footprint in Telangana is a strong endorsement of our vision to make the state India’s AI and cloud capital. As AI transforms every sector, data centers have become the foundational infrastructure of the digital economy,” said Shri D. Sridhar Babu, Minister for Information Technology and Industries, Government of Telangana. “Telangana has created an ecosystem where progressive policies, reliable infrastructure, abundant clean energy, world-class talent and ease of doing business come together to enable global-scale investments.

“Hyderabad is not only serving India’s growing digital economy but is increasingly powering global innovation. We welcome AWS’s continued confidence in Telangana and remain committed to building the country’s most future-ready digital infrastructure ecosystem.”

AWS has pledged to invest $48 billion across all its businesses in India, of which $21bn will go toward expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure. The company launched a cloud region in Hyderabad in 2022, and in December 2025 pledged $7bn to expand its data center footprint in the region, though this has likely since grown as part of the country-wide commitment.

Bharat Future City is an urban development in the southern region of Hyderabad, spanning 30,000 acres and aimed to be an “integrated smart city grounded in Net Zero principles.” It will have within it a dedicated “AI City” which is described as a “dedicated ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence innovation, machine learning research, and hyperscale data centers.”

Elsewhere in India, AWS has a cloud region in Mumbai that launched in 2016. The company invested $3.7bn into that region between 2016 and 2022, and at the start of 2025, the company committed $8.3bn to expanding the region. This has similarly been scaled up as part of the new $48bn India commitment.
