Both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday (May 15, 2026) attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Delhi Police over the alleged rape of a woman in a bus in the city and “deteriorating” law and order situation.
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said in a post on X, “Once again, a gangrape has taken place in a moving bus in Delhi. We learnt nothing from Nirbhaya. This incident is a blot on the entire society.”
Delhi recorded the highest number of crimes against women among the Metro cities in 2024, according to the latest Crime in India report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) last week.

AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “It is extremely shameful that the Nirbhaya incident has been repeated in Delhi. A 30 year old woman was abducted at night from a bus stop on the pretext of asking for the time, after which several men gangraped her inside a moving bus for nearly two hours. The bus kept roaming for nearly 7 kilometres in Delhi’s Rani Bagh area.”
Mr. Bharadwaj questioned the law and order situation and underlined that Rani Bagh is not some remote area, but is in central Delhi. “Even after this, the news was hidden for two days. We want to ask the Commissioner why this incident was hidden and what is being done to ensure that such an incident never happens again,” he said.
Mr. Bharadwaj said that the driver and conductor gangraped the woman inside the moving bus. “Why did the Delhi Police share this information with the media so late? What was the reason behind this delay? Did the police want to suppress the rape incident?” he asked.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said that incident exposed the deteriorating law and order in the Capital and appealed to the Delhi Government to give appropriate compensation to the woman.
“This case should be tried in the fast track court so that justice is delivered to the victim and as fast as possible,” Mr. Yadav said.
“Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has totally failed to ensure the safety and security of women in the Capital as women cannot venture out without facing some sort of harassment on the streets. With a triple engine BJP Government in Delhi, with the Union Home Ministry controlling Delhi Police, law and order has become the biggest casualty in the city,” Mr. Yadav said.
He added that even after 14 years, the Nirbhaya case has not taught any lesson to the police who continue to take women’s safety and security for granted.
The NCRB 2024 report on crime against women shows that there were 109 cases of dowry deaths, 1058 cases of rape, 4646 cases of domestic violence, 3974 cases of kidnapping and 316 cases of sexual assault.
