Jun 10, 2026
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) disclosed that domestic steel mills moved 7.66 million net tons in April 2026. This figure edged up 1.1% from the 7.58 million net tons shipped in April 2025.
April output dropped 6.6% compared to the 8.20 million net tons recorded in March 2026, a decline the institute linked to subdued demand and typical seasonal shifts in major steel-using industries.
Even with the monthly setback, aggregate shipments over the first four months of 2026 surpassed those of the equivalent stretch in 2025. Through April, year-to-date deliveries reached 30.85 million net tons, up 3.6% from 29.78 million net tons in the same period a year earlier. The AISI pointed to sustained strength across manufacturing, construction, automotive, and infrastructure sectors as the primary growth driver.
By product type, corrosion-resistant sheet and strip led gains, with year-to-date volumes climbing 13% versus the first four months of 2025. Hot-rolled sheet and strip also advanced, rising 4% over the same interval. Conversely, cold-rolled sheet and strip fell 4% year over year, highlighting divergent performance among steel product categories.
