FOREVER chemicals in your food? The alternatives are right on your doorstep.
The latest research about harmful, forever chemicals that have been found in ‘every food product tested’ from one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets makes for shocking reading for anyone who cares about the health impacts of the food they eat.
Researchers from the University of Birmingham, commissioned by environmental campaigning group Foodrise, found harmful ‘forever’ chemicals in a huge number of products ranging from fresh meat and fish (including fresh cod fillets), to sausages, eggs, cheeses and milk to name a few.
Forever chemicals have also been found in fruit and veg.
Fresh and natural?
Not always, it seems.
From the chemicals sprayed on the crops, to the food processing, the treatment of animals and in the packaging, chemicals are found all along the food chain.
Why is this?
Despite the many protests, research findings and clear messages from the public to the Government, food producers and retailers, that consumers want honest, natural food without additives and chemicals, still these products form a high proportion of the food available in the UK.
With them comes the relentless marketing and in many cases, restricted choices that enable the food industry to continue imposing these products upon us.
The revolving door at DEFRA doesn’t help (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), with multiple ministers cycling through the role of Secretary of State in a short period
Hardly time to implement changes to the food system or clear up the rot.
The solution surely lies in the hands of every one of us, the consumer.
Of course, it isn’t always possible to avoid convenience foods if you’re time-short and on a budget, but start with small changes; restrict the synthetic, processed foods and takeaways you eat, buy directly from the traceable producers and growers in your area.
LCMG’s veg delivery scheme is affordable and grown without chemicals – come and ask us questions, any Tuesday or Thursday morning, 8.30-11.30 at our site in Sheepscombe or on the first Saturday of the month at Stroud Farmers’ market.
By supporting each other, we will be able to take our chemical-free food supply into our own hands.
