MIT Media Lab Awarded $1M Grant to Launch First Cloud Laboratory for Learning — MIT Media Lab

A new platform will let anyone with a computer conduct real lab experiments at the intersection of biology, AI, and robotics.

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) has awarded the MIT Media Lab a $1 million Gamechanger Grant to establish the first Cloud Laboratory for Learning at MIT, a platform designed to make hands-on biotechnology education accessible to anyone with a computer and an internet connection.

The award is part of a broader $12.3 million investment announced July 23 by the Healey-Driscoll Administration, supporting 68 organizations across Massachusetts through the MLSC’s Education and Workforce Development Grant Program. This grant, the largest single award in the program, will extend the reach of the new cloud lab to learners in Cambridge, Boston, Lowell, and Worcester.

The initiative is led by Dr. David Kong, Director of the Community Biotechnology Initiative (CBI) at the MIT Media Lab. Since its founding, CBI has worked to democratize access to the life sciences through open-source tools and global education programs, driven by the belief that diverse, decentralized communities can produce disruptive innovations in biotechnology.

“The future of robotics, AI, and the life sciences is here, and Massachusetts must continue leading by investing in the critical technical infrastructure and educational programs to prepare the next generation of innovators,” said Kong. “We are deeply grateful to the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center for supporting the first Cloud Laboratory for Learning at MIT, which will expand access to cutting-edge, hands-on education at the intersection of biology, AI, and robotics across the Commonwealth.”

By enabling learners to conduct real laboratory experiments with only an internet connection and a computer, we are opening new pathways for anyone, regardless of their economic background, to help shape the future of biotechnology.

The Cloud Laboratory for Learning reflects the MIT Media Lab’s core mission to create transformative technologies that enable people to reimagine their lives. By removing the physical and financial barriers that have historically limited access to laboratory science, the project embodies the Lab’s vision of inventing a better and more just future, by, with, and for all.
