Denmark: EVs account for almost all new car registrations in July

According to industry association Mobility Denmark, citing data from bilstatistik.dk, battery-electric vehicles accounted for 11,672 of the 14,562 new passenger car registrations in Denmark in July. That corresponds to a market share of 80.2%. Among private buyers, the share of battery-electric cars in new registrations reached 97%.

“The electric car has become the natural choice for nearly all Danes when buying a new car. With 97% of new cars for private individuals being electric, it demonstrates how far the green transformation of the automotive market has come. This shift was made possible because the reduced registration tax has made electric cars an economically attractive option, helping Denmark achieve its climate goals,” said Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark.

Mobility Denmark warns that the gradual increase in registration tax for electric cars from next year is likely to raise the price of most popular EV models and could slow the market’s momentum.

Despite this, the industry association expects the number of electric cars on Danish roads to reach one million by 2027. At that point, around one in three passenger cars in Denmark is projected to be battery-electric.

“One million electric cars already next year will be a green milestone for Denmark. When every third passenger car becomes electric, it will have a noticeable impact on CO2 emissions and bring us a big step closer to the climate goals,” added Rørvig.
