Delhi Eyes Badminton World Championships Redemption With Improved Venue, Better Air Quality and Stronger Animal Control Measures

New Delhi is aiming to restore its reputation as a premier destination for international badminton as it prepares to host the Badminton World Championships 2026 from August 17 to 23. After criticism over bird droppings, stray animals and air quality concerns during the India Open earlier this year, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) say extensive improvements have been made to ensure a world-class tournament at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Inspections have been carried out to enhance the roofs for maintenance, the air-conditioning systems have been tested and the lighting systems have been improved to international standards,” says Lund. The Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium has been waterproofed as well to make sure that there is no problem in the stadium during the championship due to weather. The improvements are expected to provide their athletes with the best possible playing conditions during the 7-day tournament, officials said.

BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra said that they now have a triple-door entry system, 24-hour security and better coordination with local authorities at the venue. Different animals have also been relocated from the neighborhood of the stadium.
