Auto Dealers Association Lobbies Amid Tariff Crisis

Why It Matters

The American International Automobile Dealers Association is lobbying amid a tariff crisis reshaping the auto industry. The association’s lobbying agenda reflects efforts to navigate an evolving regulatory landscape where tariffs remain in place despite a Supreme Court ruling limiting their legal foundation.

By the Numbers

The 25% Section 232 tariffs on imported vehicles and parts imposed in March 2025 have cost the sector $35 billion and driven average vehicle prices up by $1,315 in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Dealers absorbed 4.5% of these tariff-driven price increases themselves. With U.S. auto sales on track for a 2.6% decline in 2026 and buyers rapidly shifting toward affordability, dealers face mounting pressure on margins and sales volume.

Broader Context

Congress and the administration have taken divergent approaches to automotive regulation. The Senate voted 51-44 to revoke the EPA waiver that allowed California’s aggressive electric vehicle mandate, while the House has pursued parallel disapproval measures. The administration signaled it would pursue additional Section 232 investigations that could replace the struck-down tariffs after the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on February 20 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize tariffs. Section 232 tariffs on vehicles and parts remain in place despite that ruling. Commerce created a narrow tariff relief pathway for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and parts under a Trump October 2025 proclamation, offering limited reprieve for certain segments.

The American International Automobile Dealers Association operates an in-house lobbying operation rather than relying on external firms. The association’s congressional engagement spans multiple legislative efforts, including disapproval resolutions targeting California’s electric vehicle mandate standards and broader tax and economic proposals. The filing reflects dealer industry concerns across multiple fronts as tariff impacts compound with other market pressures.

The Bottom Line

Dealers face a compressed market where tariff costs, climbing vehicle prices, and consumer affordability concerns are reshaping buyer behavior. The association’s lobbying activity reflects the industry’s effort to influence policy as Congress and the administration grapple with competing approaches to trade, emissions standards, and economic regulation.
