PETALING JAYA:

A man and his wife died after a man, believed to be driving under the influence (DUI), crashed into their motorcycle near Menara Great Eastern along Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, early yesterday morning.

Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement chief Zamzuri Isa said the 5.34am crash involved a Toyota Vios and a Honda Wave Alpha motorcycle.

He said initial investigations found that the driver of the Vios, a 24-year-old man, likely lost control of his car before crashing into the rear of the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, a 61-year-old man, and his 56-year-old wife, who was riding pillion, suffered serious head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Zamzuri said the car driver suffered head injuries and is still being treated in the red zone of Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

He added that two passengers in the car were also injured – the first, a 23-year-old man, is being treated for head injuries in the same hospital, while the second man, 24, suffered cuts to his lips and tongue and received outpatient treatment before being discharged yesterday.

The latter filed a police report over the accident and his statement has been recorded to assist in the investigation.

“The driver is suspected to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident. His blood and urine samples were sent for analysis,” Zamzuri said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

Police urged anyone with information on the crash to contact the Tun HS Lee traffic police station at 03-2071 9999 or the nearest police station.
