JAKARTA – In less than a month, the Polda Metro Jaya has arrested 173 perpetrators of street crimes, including begal perpetrators who have disturbed residents of Jakarta and its surroundings. The arrest was made through the formation of the Begal Hunter Task Force in the context of the Jaga Jakarta Program.

“Street crime in the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police in the past month has experienced a significant increase,” said the Director of Criminal Investigation of the Metro Jaya Police, Iman Imanuddin, at a press conference, at the Metro Jaya Police, South Jakarta, Friday, May 22, 2026.

Iman said that the existence of social media (Medsos) also helped the police to accelerate the process of uncovering cases to the arrest of perpetrators. In fact, at least 16 videos of criminal acts that went viral on social media can be taken action.

In fact, the video clearly shows the theft activity and the physical characteristics of the perpetrators at the scene.

“With the speed of information on social media, it is quite helpful for us to immediately take steps to disclose and legal steps in arresting the suspects,” he said.

Iman explained that since May 1 to May 22, 2026, his party had recorded 1,283 reports of street crimes. The cases consisted of 651 reports of theft with charges, 396 ordinary theft reports, 209 motor vehicle theft reports, and 27 reports of theft with violence.

“With a total of 173 suspects that we have made forced efforts. A total of 38 arrests were made by the Begal Hunter Team of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Polda Metro Jaya and 135 suspects were handled by the police,” he said.

Furthermore, Iman emphasized that the police would not hesitate to take firm and measured action against perpetrators who resisted when they were arrested. This step is taken to maintain the safety of the community and officers who are on duty in the field.

“For the suspects who, when we arrested them, resisted or fled, we took firm and measured action,” he said.

Iman said, the police also seized hundreds of evidence of the crime. There were a total of 466 pieces of evidence that were secured, ranging from cellphones, motorcycles, cars, laptops to firearms and sharp weapons that were often used by the perpetrators in carrying out their criminal acts.

“There were eight gunshots and ammunition, then 45 sharp weapons were also used by the perpetrator in carrying out his crime,” he said.

In the future, continued Iman, the Metro Jaya Police will continue to increase large-scale patrols at crime-prone points with Kodam Jaya and the Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov). Including strengthening the environmental security system through the training of kamling posts and the integration of more than 24 thousand CCTV points in the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police.

“We appeal to the public to be more vigilant when they are active at night and immediately report suspicious incidents through the 110 hotline or the nearest police station,” he concluded.
