President Trump imposes new tariffs on 80+ countries

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump is imposing new tariffs on more than 80 countries, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, using a different legal authority than the global tariffs the U.S. Supreme Court struck down earlier this year.

The new tariffs are aimed at combating forced labor and rely on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which gives the president broad authority to enact tariffs following an investigation by the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office.

The move is part of a broader push by the president to raise revenue for the U.S. Treasury. In the past two weeks, Trump announced tariffs of 25% on Brazil, 50% on Canada, and up to 200% on generic drugs.

The new round of tariffs is expected to raise tens of billions of dollars in revenue for the U.S. Tariffs are paid by importers, who typically pass their costs on to consumers.

The new tariffs are likely to be challenged in federal court.
