People’s “World Cup” you’ve never seen in Guangdong

The 2026 Guangdong City Football Super League kicked off on the evening of April 25 at Guangzhou’s iconic Yuexiushan Stadium—a historic venue built for the public in the provincial capital.

Known as “Yue Chao” for short, the tournament is Guangdong’s premier grassroots-level football event, blending high-energy competition with a vibrant display of Lingnan culture. Unlike professional leagues dominated by high-paid stars, this tournament brings together ordinary people—teachers, students, and local workers—competing not for contracts, but for hometown honor and a shared passion for the match.

With 21 city teams from across the province competing this season, “Yue Chao” showcases the pure charm of mass sports. The season is expected to run through October across Guangdong.

Follow South reporter on-site for the “Yue Chao” opener and catch every highlight.
