Gymkhana Club Challenges Centre’s Order To Vacate Lutyens’ Delhi Land

The Delhi Gymkhana Club has approached the Delhi Gymkhana Club against a Central government directive ordering it to vacate its 27.3-acre premises in Lutyens’ Delhi by June 5.

The matter was mentioned before the Delhi High Court, where Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought an urgent hearing. The court agreed to list the case for hearing on May 26.

The petition has been filed by club member Vijay Khurana, challenging the order issued by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) on May 22. The directive invoked clause 4 of the original lease deed, which allows the government to reclaim the land if it is required for a “public purpose.”

The government has stated that the 27.3-acre property located at 2 Safdarjung Road is required for strengthening defence infrastructure, governance facilities, and other critical public security purposes. The order also specifies that upon re-entry, the land along with all structures and facilities will vest fully with the President of India through the L&DO.

The dispute now moves to the Delhi High Court for urgent consideration, as the club challenges the legality and urgency of the eviction order.
