Delhi Government Likely to Rename Mahila Samridhi Yojna as Delhi Laxmi Yojna

The BJP-led Delhi Government is likely to rename its proposed ‘Mahila Samridhi Yojna’ — monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 for eligible women — as ‘Delhi Laxmi Yojna’ before rolling it out, a source said.

The Government has also prepared a registration portal for the scheme and is planning to launch a mobile application aimed at enhancing women’s safety, the source said.

The scheme, one of the BJP’s key promises made during the 2025 Delhi Assembly polls, is expected to benefit around 17 lakh women from economically weaker sections in the national Capital.

The Women and Child Development Department, headed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will implement the scheme.

The scheme was earlier expected to be announced on June 1. However, its launch was deferred as the government decided to rename it, the source told PTI.

The source further said that the registration portal has been readied and is likely to become operational soon after the scheme is formally launched.

In the 2026-27 Budget presented in March, Gupta allocated Rs 5,100 crore for the scheme. A similar allocation had also been made in the previous fiscal, but the rollout was delayed due to the lack of authenticated data for verifying eligible beneficiaries.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly said the scheme would be launched only after putting in place a foolproof mechanism to ensure that the benefits reach genuine beneficiaries.

A committee headed by Gupta was constituted in March last year to oversee the implementation of the scheme. It includes several Cabinet ministers.

The source said the eligibility criteria have also been finalised. Women possessing a Delhi Aadhaar number and belonging to the below-poverty-line category will be eligible to apply for the monthly financial assistance.
