Many motorists believe traffic challans are issued only for offences such as speeding, jumping a red light or driving without a seat belt. However, in Delhi, smoking inside a vehicle can also lead to a penalty.
Even if the car is privately owned, smoking while inside the vehicle is treated as a traffic violation under Delhi’s traffic rules and can result in a challan.
CAN YOU SMOKE INSIDE YOUR CAR?
According to the Delhi Traffic Police’s list of traffic offences, “Smoking in the Vehicles” is a punishable offence under DMVR 86.1(5)/177 of the Motor Vehicles Act. A first-time violation can attract a fine of Rs 500, while repeat offenders may have to pay Rs 1,500.
WHY IS IT AN OFFENCE?
The rule is aimed at improving road safety. Smoking while driving or inside a moving vehicle can distract the driver, reducing attention on the road and increasing the risk of an accident.
Authorities consider it a safety issue rather than just a personal habit.
PRIVATE CAR? THE RULE STILL APPLIES
Many people assume that what they do inside their private car is their personal choice.
However, Delhi’s traffic rules do not exempt private vehicles from this offence. If a person is found smoking inside a vehicle on the road, a challan can still be issued.
EXTRA RISK FOR CNG VEHICLES
The risk can be even higher in CNG-powered vehicles. In the event of a gas leak, lighting a cigarette inside the vehicle could increase the possibility of a fire or even an explosion.
This is one of the reasons authorities advise motorists to avoid smoking inside any vehicle.

KNOW THE RULES BEFORE YOU DRIVE
Delhi has several lesser-known traffic rules that can also lead to fines, including playing loud music inside a vehicle or driving without essential equipment such as functioning wipers.
Knowing these rules can help motorists avoid unnecessary challans while making the roads safer for everyone.
