Much of Japan saw summer-like weather on Saturday, with temperatures topping 30 degrees Celsius in some places.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a cold air mass has brought localized rain clouds to Hokkaido and northern Tohoku. But skies were clear from southern Tohoku to Okinawa and Amami regions, south of Kyushu.
By 2 p.m. on Saturday, temperatures had reached 33.8 degrees Celsius in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture; 32.2 degrees in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture; 32.1 degrees in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, and Hita City, Oita Prefecture; and 30.5 degrees in Tokyo’s Nerima Ward and Fukushima City.
Temperatures are expected to stay high through Monday.
The agency says Severe Tropical Storm Jangmi was east of the Philippines on Saturday. It is forecast to move north as it gains strength. Jangmi is expected to approach Amami and Okinawa from Monday through Tuesday.
It may then move toward Kyushu, Shikoku and Kinki, potentially nearing Tokai and Kanto-Koshin by Wednesday.
A front north of Jangmi is expected to bring heavy rain from Kyushu to Kanto-Koshin ahead of the storm’s arrival.
