What Indonesian students want to say to their officials ahead of GMD·Huangshan

As the 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue · Huangshan prepares to open in Huangshan, Anhui, on May 28, mayors and officials from countries including Germany, Italy, Nepal, Indonesia, Nigeria, Serbia, Thailand, etc. are gathering to exchange views on urban governance and cultural cooperation.

Located in eastern China’s Anhui Province, Huangshan is best known for the world-famous Mount Huangshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its stunning granite peaks, ancient pine trees, and sea of clouds. In addition to its natural landscapes, the city is also deeply rooted in Huizhou culture, one of China’s most influential regional traditions in architecture, commerce, and heritage.

Before the event officially began, some Indonesian students were particularly delighted to learn that Indonesian officials would also be present. They also had a message to share from their eight months studying and living in Huangshan.

For student Zakiya Hariza, visiting the famous Mount Huangshan scenic area was one of the most memorable experiences. She stated the cable car system made the mountain accessible to visitors of all ages, including elderly people who may be unable to complete the climb on foot. “I hope that one day Indonesia can also make mountains and tourist attractions more friendly to visitors of all ages,” she said.

Another student, Marscelli, mentioned that Indonesia could learn from China’s public transportation system. She said the convenience of urban rail transit can make travel much easier not only for local residents, but also for international visitors.

Meanwhile, student Arta said events like the Global Mayors Dialogue provide an important platform for countries to showcase their culture and strengthen international exchanges.

“I think Indonesia should also invite more countries and host international events like this in Huangshan,” she said. “It’s a good opportunity to show the beauty of Indonesian culture to the world.”

Their perspectives highlight how people-to-people exchanges can offer a more personal dimension to international dialogue, especially among younger generations experiencing different cultures firsthand.
