Indonesia Keeps Subsidized Fuel Prices Unchanged Despite Rupiah Slide

Jakarta. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has assured the public that subsidized fuel prices will remain unchanged through the end of 2026 despite mounting pressure on the rupiah, which has weakened to as low as Rp 17,877 against the US dollar.

Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot Tanjung said the government remained committed to maintaining subsidized fuel prices: Pertalite gasoline at Rp 10,000 per liter and Biosolar diesel at Rp 6,800 per liter.

“The increase in subsidized fuel prices has already been addressed. There will be no increase until the end of the year,” Yuliot said on Friday.

The government also said national fuel reserves remain secure and well above minimum operational requirements.

According to Yuliot, Indonesia’s minimum operational fuel reserve standard stands at 23 days. Current stock levels for both Pertalite gasoline and CN48 diesel are above the mandatory threshold.

He added that supplies of non-subsidized fuels were also sufficient to meet domestic demand.

The assurances come as Indonesia faces renewed pressure on the rupiah despite efforts by to stabilize the currency. The central bank recently raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 5.25% in response to currency volatility.

According to Bank Indonesia’s transaction rate on Friday, the rupiah weakened to Rp 17,877 per US dollar.

Amid the currency pressure, the government said it is accelerating efforts to boost domestic oil production and expand refining capacity to reduce reliance on imports.

“We are pushing for higher domestic production, and preparations for domestic refineries have also been made,” Yuliot said.

Previously, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister said subsidized fuel prices would remain safe even though Indonesia’s crude oil benchmark, known as the Indonesian Crude Price (ICP), averaged $117.31 per barrel in April 2026.

However, Bahlil added that the average ICP since January remained below $100 per barrel, at around $80 to $81.

“Our average ICP from January until now is around $80 to $81 per barrel, so it has not reached $100,” Bahlil said.

He reiterated that subsidized fuel prices would remain stable through the end of the year.
