An Indian woman rides the “Well of Death” for a living

In India, riders and drivers perform stunts on the vertical walls of what looks like a giant wooden barrel. This traveling show attraction is known as the Well of Death. For some stunt performers it’s simply a job, but for Rehana Khan it’s a passion. Neither her family nor her in-laws wanted her to take up this risky profession, but eventually her husband supported her decision. She says, “A woman’s life is more than cooking, childcare and housework. In today’s world, being self-reliant is essential.” Now women, in particular, come to see her defy gravity on her motorbike. Yet, this traditional spectacle is on the decline and its future is far from certain. Still, Rehana Khan plans to keep performing in the Well of Death for as long as she can.
