Hong Kong has broken its record for the hottest day of the year with the city’s temperature reaching 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 Fahrenheit) on Sunday afternoon under the impact of Severe Typhoon Dolphin.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, the outer subsiding air associated with Dolphin brought generally fine and extremely hot weather to Guangdong province.

By 1pm, the temperature recorded by the weather forecaster at the Observatory was 36 degrees, the highest so far this year, breaking the record of 34.7 degrees on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Sheung Shui recorded 38.3 degrees, and Yuen Long Park and Wong Tai Sin recorded about 37 degrees.

The weather forecaster said the high-temperature weather will continue until midweek this week.

Dolphin was centred about 180km (112 miles) east of Wenzhou and was forecast to move west at about 18 km/h (11.2mph) towards Zhejiang province and then move inland.
