Hong Kong is facing a “triple epidemic” of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, according to Kwan Yat-wah, president of the Asian Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases and honorary clinical associate professor at The University of Hong Kong.

Speaking on a Commercial Radio show on Saturday, he warned that the simultaneous circulation of these three viruses is putting pressure on the healthcare system.

The professor emphasized that the flu season yet to peak, urging the public to remain vigilant, continue basic protective measures like wearing masks and washing hands frequently, and pay close attention to hygiene when traveling abroad.

Despite the summer holidays, he said students are still taking part in group activities such as extracurricular classes, which can help influenza spread.

On the death of a seven-year-old boy from influenza A — the first pediatric influenza fatal case in Hong Kong this year — Kwan said it’s unfortunate, but was an isolated case.

The boy, who had been healthy, developed cold symptoms on July 27 and a fever on Aug 1. His condition deteriorated rapidly on Aug 3 and he died the following day. His clinical diagnosis was influenza A infection complicated by shock and encephalopathy.

A preliminary investigation by the Centre for Health Protection found that the boy had received the 2025/26 seasonal influenza vaccination and had no travel history during the incubation period.

Discussing the effectiveness of vaccination, Kwan explained that the boy’s antibody levels may have waned over time since the vaccination campaign began about six months ago.

In related developments, the Hong Kong authorities said the family doctor vaccine procurement pilot program will continue for the 2026/27 season, increasing the number of vaccine doses available for eligible doctors from 100,000 to 300,000.

Kwan welcomed the move, noting that awareness of flu prevention has grown and that more private doctors are proactively vaccinating high-risk individuals. He called on the authorities to strengthen vaccine procurement and public education efforts to boost vaccination coverage.
