UAE tanker detained by Iran near Qeshm Island

Iranian media reported Monday that authorities have detained a UAE-owned oil tanker near southern Iran’s Qeshm Island while the vessel was traversing the Strait of Hormuz, as maritime tensions persist in the strategic chokepoint amid the ongoing US-Iran war.

Vessel intercepted

Maritime navigation data indicated the vessel was stopped during its passage through the strait, Fars News Agency reported. The semi-official outlet did not identify the specific tanker or name the Emirati company that owns it, and no official statement had been issued by either Iranian or Emirati authorities regarding the incident as of 1700GMT.

Regulatory requirements

Fars said tankers seeking safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz “must follow a route designated by Iran, pay service fees and obtain Iranian authorization.” The agency did not specify whether the detained vessel had failed to comply with these requirements or what specific violations prompted the interception. Tehran has repeatedly stated its authority over the waterway since hostilities began.

Conflict context

The Strait of Hormuz has seen escalating tensions since Washington and Tehran entered open warfare, disrupting commercial shipping routes that carry a significant portion of global energy supplies. Diplomatic efforts to reach understandings on freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway have so far failed to ease concerns over potential supply disruptions.
