China rolls out Taiwan incentives after hosting opposition leader

China announced 10 new incentive measures for Taiwan on Sunday, following a visit by Taiwan’s opposition leader, Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Kuomintang (KMT). The measures include easing tourist restrictions, allowing “healthy” television dramas, and making it easier to sell food. These steps aim to enhance communication between the KMT and China’s Communist Party, resume flights, and allow visitors from Shanghai and Fujian to Taiwan.

China’s Xinhua news agency stated that food and fishery product inspections will be eased but must align with opposing Taiwan’s independence. Taiwanese dramas and animations can be shown if they are deemed to have “correct orientation. ” The Taiwanese Mainland Affairs Council criticized these concessions as “poisoned pills” dressed as gifts and emphasized that cross-strait exchanges should not have political conditions.

The KMT welcomed the measures as a “gift” to the Taiwanese people. Relations remain strained as China refuses to engage with Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, whom they label a “separatist. ” Taiwan has raised concerns regarding China’s tourism restrictions and import bans on agricultural products.
