India-US trade deal: Delhi set for crucial four-day talks – Asia News Network

NEW DELHI – The talks over the proposed India-United States trade pact are set to intensify as a high-powered American delegation led by Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch has arrived in India to hold a four-day round of discussions aimed at pushing the long-pending Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) closer to conclusion.

The June 1-4 visit is expected to focus heavily on finalizing the contours of an interim trade arrangement while simultaneously advancing broader negotiations on market access, customs cooperation, investment facilitation and economic security alignment between the two strategic partners.

The American delegation will hold extensive discussions with the Indian negotiating team headed by Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce and India’s chief negotiator for the talks.

Push for interim pact

The latest round of face-to-face negotiations comes at a crucial stage, with both countries attempting to seal an interim agreement before moving towards a larger and more comprehensive bilateral framework.

According to the Ministry, the discussions are expected to cover multiple sensitive and commercially significant areas, including non-tariff barriers, trade facilitation measures, investment promotion and reciprocal market access commitments.

The negotiations are also unfolding against the backdrop of shifting tariff priorities in the United States, a factor that could influence the final structure and timelines of the agreement.

Tariff cuts expected

As part of the ongoing framework discussions, India has proposed reducing or eliminating tariffs on a wide range of American industrial goods and agricultural products.

The proposed list reportedly includes dried distillers’ grains (DDGs), red sorghum used in animal feed, tree nuts, soybean oil, fresh and processed fruits, along with wine, spirits and several other US-origin products.

Months of diplomatic groundwork

The current negotiations build on months of sustained engagement between New Delhi and Washington.

Earlier this year, an Indian delegation led by Darpan Jain travelled to Washington DC between April 20 and 23 for in-person consultations with American officials. Those meetings followed the February 7 Joint Statement issued by both governments, where India and the United States agreed to work toward an interim arrangement based on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade terms while continuing discussions on the full-scale BTA.

Officials familiar with the negotiations indicated that both sides have significantly narrowed differences in several sectors, pushing the talks into what is being viewed as a critical final phase.

The trade discussions are being closely watched by industry stakeholders in both countries, as the outcome could reshape bilateral commerce and deepen economic ties between two of the world’s largest democracies.
