Vergelegen: ‘Expanding into India represents an important milestone’

The centuries-old South African winery has its sights on long term growth in India, matching demand for producers that offer brand value, provenance and consistency.

Vergelegen India expand

Vergelegen Wine Estate is further cementing its footprint in Asia as it enters India through a partnership with leading wine importer Sonarys.

Following the iconic South African winery’s collaboration with Shanghai-based Tipsy Fruit in November 2025, Vergelegen’s continued expansion responds to Asian trade interest in producers that offer provenance, consistency and long-term brand value.

Vergelegen was established in 1700 in Stellenbosch, a town located 50 Km east of Cape Town. Meaning ‘situated far away’, the estate has an international reputation for producing refined wines defined by terroir that balance history with contemporary precision. For decades, Vergelegen has been considered as a benchmark winery in the Western Cape.

Premium brand appeal

The initial offering by Sonarys includes Vergelegen V, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Mill Race Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and Wild Winds Sauvignon Blanc. The wines position Vergelegen as a premium brand that appeals to top on-trade and specialist retailers.

Sonarys is known as an early mover in complex, high growth markets. Its distribution network includes major centres such as Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.

The company’s deliberate and long-term approach concentrates on fostering trade relationships, education, and building disciplined portfolios—essential in regions with fragmented routes-to-market.

Sonarys’ strategy aligns with Vergelegen’s aspirations towards sustainable development of its brand in Asia rather than short-term distribution wins.

Vergelegen India
‘Expanding into India represents an important milestone for us,’ said Vergelegen winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain.

Targeting a ‘constantly evolving’ market

Sonarys will concentrate on the markets of Delhi and Mumbai in the initial roll-out, with priority leaning towards key on-trade and retailers backed by select sommelier training and trade education to encourage early and engaged adoption.

“The Indian wine market is constantly evolving,” said Advait Menon, Sonarys’ vice-president of sales and marketing. “As importers, we need to stay ahead of what consumers will be looking for next. Vergelegen represents a credible, heritage-driven producer with the consistency required for long-term growth across our markets.”

“Expanding into India represents an important milestone for us,” noted Vergelegen winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain. “Working with Sonarys allows us to establish a meaningful presence in a new and dynamic trade market while maintaining the integrity of how our wines are positioned
