Sorong (ANTARA) – The Housing and Settlements Ministry announced the allocation of 3,000 housing units for Southwest Papua under a 2026 subsidy program to improve affordability.

“This is part of the government’s policy designed to elevate community welfare through the provision of decent housing,” PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait stated on Monday.

The minister remarked during an official visit to Sorong, Southwest Papua, that cross sector collaboration is essential to ensure the program strictly serves those in need.

He noted that the ministry is partnering with Public Housing Savings Management Agency (BP Tapera) and local business professionals to boost the quality of housing in the region.

Sirait emphasized that empowering young Papuan entrepreneurs could help accelerate development and stimulate the growth of the local economy.

“Our vision is to help those entrepreneurs avoid being sidelined, enabling them to play a central role in developing homes in their region,” the minister stated.

He assured the public that the initiative extends beyond physical construction to include inclusive financing schemes tailored to local communities.

“We want residents across Papua to be able to own homes through affordable and sustainable schemes,” Sirait affirmed.

The minister reiterated that the approach ensures subsidies are well targeted while contributing to the upliftment of local economies.

Southwest Papua Governor Elisa Kambu voiced support for the program and pledged to simplify permit procedures for developers.

“We are committed to supporting the national strategic program for the housing sector, including by ensuring easy permits, implementing policies, and fostering cross-sector coordination,” he remarked.

The governor added that the provincial government will focus on directing housing subsidies to low income citizens and informal sector workers, and young residents.
