NZ Grants First Offshore Oil & Gas Permit Post-Ban Reversal | EnZed Energy Taranaki – News and Statistics

New Zealand’s government has issued its first offshore oil and gas exploration permit since reversing a drilling ban that was introduced by the previous administration. The earlier policy had aimed to shift the country away from hydrocarbons toward electricity generated from low-carbon sources.

According to the source, the current government has prioritized energy security and removed the ban last year, inviting companies to bid for exploration rights. Australian firm EnZed Energy has become the first company to secure such a permit in the post-reversal period.

Resource Minister Shane Jones described the permit as a significant step for the national energy sector, indicating that the country is open for business. The permit covers a 12-year term in the Taranaki Basin, a region that already hosts 400 wells across 20 oil and gas fields, though its full potential remains underdeveloped, according to official government data.

New Zealand was once self-sufficient in natural gas, but production has declined sharply over the past decade, with no new exploration allowed during that time. Monthly gas output averaged about 215 million cubic meters last year, down from 415 million cubic meters per month in 2017. As a result, the country has grown more dependent on imports and has experienced the disadvantages of that reliance.

Even before the recent import pressures, the current government had announced plans to build an LNG import terminal, with operations targeted as early as next year or in 2028. Energy Minister Simon Watts noted earlier this year that while the country is seeing a boom in renewable electricity, falling gas supply leaves the power sector vulnerable during dry periods when hydroelectric reservoirs are low.
