Freight from the iron and steel sector, including iron ore, ferrous metals, coal, coke, and limestone for fluxing, typically makes up 47% of Ukrzaliznytsia’s total cargo volume, according to data published by GMK Center. The total volume of iron and steel sector freight in 2025 declined by 53% compared to 2021, falling from 163.3 million tons to 76.8 million tons.

Over the past year, the volume of iron and steel sector freight dropped by 4.6% year-on-year, a decrease of 3.7 million tons, to 76.5 million tons. In the first quarter of 2026, the figure fell by 14.7% year-on-year, or by 2.6 million tons, to 15.3 million tons. The primary driver was a sharp reduction in iron ore exports, which decreased by 2.6 million tons, a 31% year-on-year decline.

In the first quarter, the main departure point for ferrous steel was the Zaporizhzhia-Liva station, handling 790,000 tons, nearly double that of its nearest competitors. Other key industrial hubs included Kamianske (423,000 tons) and Kryvyi Rih (380,000 tons). The primary destinations were export routes: the Odessa-Port station (511,000 tons) and Berehove (226,000 tons). Western railway crossings were also actively used, including Mostyska II (148,000 tons) and Izov (99,000 tons) toward Poland. The Port of Izmail, with 96,000 tons, remains a key hub for Danube routes.

The transport mix in the first quarter consisted of cast iron (24%), steel billets (19%), rails (6%), and pipes and ferroalloys (1% each). Other types of rolled steel products accounted for the bulk of shipments, at 49%.

The trend in ferrous metal exports has shifted following the launch of the maritime corridor in August 2023, which allowed ferrous steel exports to resume from Black Sea ports. In 2023, export shipments through western border crossings accounted for 62% of the total, but by the end of 2025 that share had fallen to 35%. Port transshipment of ferrous steel last year represented 65% of exports.

Ukrzaliznytsia currently operates 15 railway border crossings: four with Poland, two each with Slovakia and Hungary, and four and three with Moldova and Romania, respectively. These crossings are operating at 35-45% of their capacity, allowing for a potential twofold increase in cargo volumes if needed.
