European Union steel producers are positioning for a market recovery following a period of subdued profitability, according to a report from Reuters.

Market demand within the EU has not yet returned to levels seen in 2022. However, steel prices have increased more rapidly than anticipated recently. This price rise is attributed to higher energy costs and a decrease in imports from outside the bloc, resulting from new EU protective measures.

Oddo BHF analyst Maxim Kogge stated that current conditions for the steel industry are generally favorable, with the exception of demand. He pointed out that the EU has structurally strengthened its system through mechanisms such as the CBAM and a proposed new trade policy featuring reduced quotas, unlike previous one-off anti-import measures.

According to data compiled by LSEG, higher steel prices are expected to support EU steel producers, with nearly all of them likely to report improved profits for the first quarter.

The conflict in the Middle East is also providing certain advantages to European steelmakers. While the situation brings increased uncertainty, threats to future investments and procurement, and a decline in business activity in the eurozone, the conflict with Iran is simultaneously improving the competitiveness of EU steel producers.

Hansjorg Pack, a senior equity portfolio manager at Germany’s DWS, noted that Asian companies have been more severely affected than their European counterparts, particularly in the commodities and specialty chemicals sectors, due to their much higher dependence on energy resources from the Middle East.

In an early April note to investors, Bank of America analysts indicated that higher shipping costs have helped to regionalize the European steel market. Customers are shifting their purchases to domestic producers due to concerns about supply disruptions.

Italian and German steelmakers have recently signaled to buyers that prices for long products would rise. Steel mills are under pressure from increasing energy prices. At the same time, mill margins have increased following the recent price hikes, and this trend is likely to continue amid tighter import restrictions.
