Move aims to curb road offences and social ills among students

KUALA LUMPUR: From the school gates to the roads beyond, Kuala Lumpur traffic police will soon keep a closer watch on students at 122 secondary schools in the city under a new advocacy and enforcement programme.

City police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the initiative, which is aimed at curbing traffic offences and social ills, will involve Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) personnel stationed at schools.

They will help manage traffic flow during drop-off and pick-up hours while conducting checks to ensure students hold valid driving licences and comply with road regulations.

“JSPT personnel will assist school authorities and the community in ensuring the smooth flow of vehicles entering and leaving school compounds during school sessions,” he said after launching the Traffic Compliance Advocacy Programme at SMK Alam Damai yesterday.

The campaign will also involve various police departments, including the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, Criminal Investigation Department and Commercial Crime Investigation Department, in conducting crime prevention and awareness programmes at schools.

“The initiative was necessary as many students arrested were involved in offences under Section 42 since last year,” Comm Fadil said.

Under the Road Transport Act, Section 42 deals specifically with reckless and dangerous driving.

On another matter, Comm Fadil said police are investigating allegations of corruption and abuse of power involving the chief of a police station in the capital.

He said the district police chief and the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department had been directed to verify claims that a police inspector forced subordinates to collect protection money from gambling premises and massage parlours in Wangsa Maju.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” he said, adding that the officer’s statement had been recorded and that he remained on duty pending the outcome of investigations.

Meanwhile, Comm Fadil said police had received information regarding the “Himpunan Gegar TikTok” gathering organised by businessman Albert Tei, which is expected to take place today at TikTok’s headquarters here.

He said discussions had already been held with the organisers and police would facilitate the gathering while ensuring public safety.

“If such a gathering is organised, we will ensure that the safety of all parties remains the priority.

“However, we will take stern action if any violence or violations of the law occur,” he added.
