A p-hailing rider has been charged in the magistrates’ court here today with making a death threat against a 24-year-old woman last week.
A Vinodvarma, 36, is accused of committing the offence against barbershop assistant Ashha Begum near a shop along Jalan Ipoh at about 6.20pm on May 22.
During the incident, the accused, who was allegedly intoxicated, was said to have demanded that the victim repay money he had used to buy her a gift.
He then allegedly hurled profanities at the woman and subsequently issued a death threat against her.
Vinodvarma claimed trial to the charge before magistrate Farah Nabihah Dan.
Deputy public prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa proposed no bail.
However, defence counsel Erickka Farrise Amir urged the court to impose minimal bail, saying the accused was the sole breadwinner for his family.
“His mother suffers from heart problems, high blood pressure and diabetes, while his father is disabled.”
He also told the court that the accused had recently been involved in an accident and fractured his left hand.
The lawyer submitted that the accused did not cause any physical injury or property damage and was not a flight risk.
The court allowed bail of RM4,000 with two sureties and ordered the accused to report to a police station once a month pending the conclusion of the case.
He was also reminded not to interfere with prosecution witnesses, particularly the victim.
The court fixed June 30 for mention.
