Leaders oversee 26 agreements spanning economy, defence and regional cooperation.

Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto hosted Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the annual Indonesia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on 7 July, where the two leaders oversaw the conclusion of 26 agreements to expand bilateral cooperation in economic development, defence, clean energy, connectivity, education and regional affairs.

According to Singapore’s Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Wong was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli, and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng. President Prabowo was joined by members of the Indonesian Cabinet, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

At a joint press conference following the retreat, President Prabowo said economic cooperation remained “the pillar” of Indonesia-Singapore relations, noting that Singapore continues to be one of Indonesia’s largest foreign investors. He said the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy through cross-border electricity trade, carbon capture and storage, and sustainable industrial development. Prabowo also announced that Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, had been assigned to implement electricity trade with Singapore.

President Prabowo said Indonesia and Singapore had also agreed to deepen defence cooperation through expanded military training and institutional collaboration. On maritime security, he said both countries reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the Strait of Malacca safe, secure and open in accordance with international law. He added that Indonesia and Singapore shared the view that ASEAN should remain central to the regional architecture and that regional disputes should be resolved through dialogue and international law.

Prime Minister Wong said Singapore remains committed to strengthening cooperation with Indonesia in three priority areas: economic growth, the green economy and defence. He said Singapore supports expanding direct air connectivity to more Indonesian destinations and invited students from Indonesia’s Garuda Senior High School programme to participate in educational exchange programmes in Singapore.

Prime Minister Wong also said Singapore would continue consulting Indonesia as it prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027. Looking ahead to the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Singapore in 2027, he said the annual Leaders’ Retreat provides an important platform for both governments to advance practical cooperation and address shared priorities.
