Canton Fair after-hours③: Five must-eat dishes in Guangzhou

If you’re in Guangzhou for the Canton Fair and skip the city’s food scene, you’re missing one of its best parts.

Guangzhou is known not only for business and trade, but also as one of China’s great food capitals, where everyday meals are treated with real care and flavors are built around balance, freshness and comfort. If you only have a short break during the May Day holiday, here’s a local-style food route through the city.

Your day should probably start with dim sum. At a traditional teahouse, you’ll see bamboo steamers stacked high, steam rising into the air and locals sitting around tables, talking and eating slowly. It’s not just about the food. It’s a whole lifestyle. Among all the dishes, shrimp dumplings are a must. The wrapper is soft with a slight chew, and inside, the shrimp is fresh, juicy and naturally sweet. One bite is enough to understand why dim sum is at the heart of Guangzhou’s food culture.

Later on, try rice noodle rolls, which are usually made fresh right in front of you. The rice sheets are thin and silky, almost melting as soon as they touch your mouth, while light soy sauce seeps into every layer. Simple as they look, they are deeply satisfying in a way that only makes sense once you try them.

For something richer, roast goose is the dish that often surprises first-time visitors. Bite into it, and you hear the crisp crack of the skin, followed by juicy, flavorful meat. It is bold, slightly indulgent and one of those tastes that stays with you long after the meal.

If you have time to sit down and wait a bit, clay pot rice is absolutely worth it. When the lid is lifted, a warm, savory aroma rises instantly. The rice absorbs the flavors of the toppings, but the real highlight is the crispy layer at the bottom of the pot. The contrast between soft rice and crunchy crust is what makes the dish so special.

To finish, you can’t go wrong with a bowl of double-skin milk. It looks simple, almost too plain, but the texture is smooth and creamy, with just the right amount of sweetness. After a full day of eating, it feels like the perfect ending.

What makes Guangzhou’s food stand out is not complexity or presentation, but balance, freshness and technique. Even the simplest dishes are made with care.

So if you’re visiting for the Canton Fair, don’t just stay around the exhibition halls. Step out, follow the locals and eat your way through the city.
