Dragon boat race in Guangzhou’s Nansha connects cultures

More than 1,000 athletes from 50 teams gathered along the Jiaomen River in Guangzhou’s Nansha District on June 13 for the 2026 Guangzhou Nansha Dragon Boat Invitational, turning a traditional folk festival into a vibrant celebration of cultural exchange and youthful energy.

The event featured 22-person and 12-person dragon boat races over 400 metres across five categories. This year’s diverse lineup brought seasoned local crews from Nansha together with spirited teams from Hong Kong, Macao, and other regions, while many young international paddlers took part for the first time. “It’s an exciting experience to be on the race course,” said a Macao competitor working in Nansha, while a paddler from Mauritius praised the city’s excellent conditions for dragon boat racing.

Beyond the races, the event also featured a sports carnival and a traditional “dragon boat rice” feast, as well as the debut of cultural and creative products co-designed by artists from Hong Kong. The invitational is part of Guangzhou’s broader sports consumption season, which offers discounts and half-price admission to local attractions.

Situated at the Pearl River estuary and home to a centuries-old dragon boat tradition, Nansha has strengthened its role as an open, inclusive, and youthful international hub within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The annual race demonstrates how a time-honoured water festival can evolve into an immersive celebration of shared aspirations and cross-cultural connection.
