Zhang Anjiang, vice mayor and police chief of the southwestern Chinese megacity of Chongqing, died Thursday morning after a sudden illness, according to state media reports. He was 55.
Zhang died at 10:52 a.m. local time on May 7, despite emergency medical treatment, according to an obituary published by the state-run Chongqing Daily.
Before his death, Zhang ranked fourth among Chongqing’s seven vice mayors. He oversaw the city’s public security, judicial administration, petitioning, and state secrecy operations. He also served as head of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau’s Communist Party committee.
