SHAH ALAM, July 2 — Selangor remains Malaysia’s largest economic driver, contributing RM460.1 billion to the national gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025, following the Malaysian Statistics Department’s (DOSM) latest report yesterday.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said that the figure accounted for 26.5 per cent of the nation’s overall economic activity.

In 2024, Selangor contributed RM432.1 billion to the national GDP, or 26.2 per cent.

“Yesterday, DOSM released the official 2025 national economic performance figures, which showed that Selangor’s economy expanded by RM28 billion to reach RM460.1 billion.

“This RM28 billion expansion in economic value is two times more when compared to other states in Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.

Amirudin added that the achievement surpassed an economic outlook conducted by Universiti Putra Malaysia, in collaboration with the Selangor Research Institute, which projected that Selangor’s economy would grow to approximately RM455.3 billion.

“The strong performance expanded the state’s economy to more than 1.7 times the size of Kuala Lumpur’s and 2.7 times that of Johor’s,” he said.

Amirudin noted that Selangor’s economic growth rate of 6.3 per cent in 2025 outperformed the national rate of 5.2 per cent.

Specifically, the state’s economic growth was driven by the expansion of three key sectors: services, by RM15.9 billion; manufacturing, by RM5.3 billion; and construction, by RM3.7 billion.

“This achievement further strengthened Selangor’s position, with the state now accounting for more than one-third, or 35.9 per cent, of Malaysia’s construction activity.

“Its share of the national manufacturing sector also rose to 32.8 per cent, while its contribution to the country’s services sector increased to 27.1 per cent,” he said.
