Torrential rain is battering wide areas of eastern and western Japan. Two major storms could compound the situation this weekend.
A Level 4 Urgent Warning for landslides was in place for parts of Shizuoka, Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures early on Saturday morning.
Level 4 is the second-highest warning, which means a disaster could happen at any time and people should evacuate immediately from dangerous areas.
Tropical Storm Mekkhala was moving off the coast of Japan’s Kyushu region as of 4 a.m. Saturday. The storm is expected to draw closer to land, moving eastward along the Pacific coast.
Tropical Storm Higos is also expected to approach eastern Japan. The two storms would likely intensify the downpours.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen and overflowing rivers. Officials say people should be alert for strong winds and high waves.
The severe weather is affecting transport. Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train services may be cancelled or delayed on Saturday.
Some expressway sections have been closed in western areas. Others in eastern areas may be closed from Saturday morning.
About 200 flights were cancelled on Friday. Airlines say flights on Saturday may be cancelled or delayed. Customers are advised to check online for the latest information.
